Bill Simpson-Young is a member of the Data61 Executive Team and Director of Engineering & Design. He leads a group of software engineers, user experience designers and data scientists in the development of new software technologies and products including in data privacy, spatial technologies, logic systems and machine learning.
Bill started out as a software engineer and has spent most of his career in R&D leadership. He has worked for global technology companies (Canon and Unisys), in government-funded research institutions (CSIRO and NICTA) and worked in research and teaching in university (University of Sydney). His interest is in leading R&D teams to develop novel technologies and products from technological research through to deployed systems in use. He has led teams to develop several technologies now used globally.
He has also taught at University of Sydney in IT Innovation including in topics such as:
- Patterns in the life cycles of new technologies and product categories.
- Disruptive innovation.
- Open innovation.
- Open source strategies.
- Organisational culture and structures for innovation.
- Agile development approaches.
- Innovation ecosystems.
