Why did we develop the Behaviour Discovery Tool?

Many people come to the Behavioural Economics Team of the Australian Government (BETA) because they are stuck on a problem.

Often they are not quite sure what Behavioural Insights is, but wonder if BETA’s approach could help them find a solution.

What users are saying about it

The simplicity is great - the questions encourage you to not only frame your thoughts in light of behaviours, but break it down further to what may/may not be helping/hindering efforts”.

It is helpful for questioning assumptions you yourself may have about a policy problem and starting the thinking process”.

“I liked how it broke down all the complex parts of policy development in a very clear way.”

“The questionnaire was easy to understand, easy to use and effective. Thanks!”

“I liked how the suggestions and questions included practical examples.”

“I like that I was able to go back and adjust my answers in response to new thoughts and ideas sparked by the tool.”

“Really neat way to clarify and articulate your core problem for your own benefit - looking forward to receiving the results and advice.

Our methodology starts with a ‘Discovery’ phase to understand the problem and the behaviours and systems involved. The questions we ask and feedback we provide often generate light-bulb moments for the people we work with.

So we decided to develop a simple online tool to make this accessible to everyone!

What does the Behaviour Discovery Tool do?

The purpose of this tool is to enable anyone in government to quickly get new perspectives and ideas on a problem – drawing from behavioural science.

In less than 10 minutes, the tool helps to explore behaviours and systems using a structured approach… and it doesn’t require any behavioural insights knowledge!

It generates a tailored report which can be sent to your email address, including practical steps, advice and resources.
