Asbestos in Australian homes is getting older and degrading, increasing the risk that harmful fibres are released. In partnership with the Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency, BETA surveyed over 4,400 homeowners to determine which financial incentives would encourage homeowners to proactively remove asbestos from their properties. We found:
Many Australian homes are hot in summer, and cold in winter. Home energy upgrades can increase the comfort of occupants while reducing energy usage and running costs of a home. The journey to making upgrades can be complex and difficult to navigate.
The Treasury is advising the government on its responses to the ACCC’s Retail Deposits Inquiry and Home Loan Price Inquiry. Despite the financial benefits that can result from switching products, the reports found a lack of consumer engagement in these markets. For both markets the ACCC recommended that prompts be considered encouraging consumers to see if they could benefit from switching to alternative products that might better suit their needs.
A common theme across BETA’s advice and research projects this year has been to change the world to suit people, rather than expect people to change to suit the world.
We are pleased to share with you our highlights from 2024.

Many victim-survivors of family and domestic violence (FDV) have experienced, or believe they would experience, stigma and discrimination in the workplace.
BETA, in partnership with the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, conducted research to understand the impact of the new entitlement for 10 days of paid family and domestic violence (FDV) leave.
We interviewed both FDV victim-survivors and employers, and surveyed 594 FDV victim-survivors, 1,437 employers and 3,008 other Australian workers.
